The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is being stricter than other industry unions that hand out annual awards by insisting that scripts submitted for its annual awards presentations be produced under WGA jurisdiction. Daily Variety observed today (Wednesday) that the guild’s stance makes several critically praised screenplays ineligible for WGA nominations, which are due to be announced next Tuesday. According to the trade publication, they include: Another Year, Biutiful, Blue Valentine, The Ghost Writer, The King’s Speech, Made in Dagenham, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Toy Story 3 and Winter’s Bone. Both the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild allow films produced outside their jurisdiction to compete for their annual awards. Moreover, the WGA said, not every film will be automatically considered; each submission must be accompanied by a formal entry form.
