BOX OFFICE SINKS FURTHER
With tens of millions of viewers remaining at home on Sunday to watch the AFC and NFC finals (CBS’s coverage of the NFC championship final was the most-watched ever, averaging 54.9 million viewers), final box office figures for the weekend came in significantly below studio estimates. Paramount’s No Strings Attached ended up with $19.7 million versus Sunday’s estimate of $20.3 million; Sony’s The Green Hornet took in $17.7 million, down from an $18.1-million estimate; Universal’s The Dilemma brought in $9.1 million, down from an estimated $9.7 million; and — hardest hit — The King’s Speech grossed $7.9 million, instead of the estimated $9.2 million. Overall, the box office was down 30.7 percent from the same weekend a year ago.
