BOX OFFICE STUNG — EXCEPT FOR THE GREEN HORNET<

The No. 1 film at the box office may have seen a fair amount of green over the weekend, but the rest of the pack did not. Overall revenue was down nearly 28 percent from the comparable four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday a year ago. Attendance was down 17 percent. Opening in first place was Sony/Columbia’s The Green Hornet with $33.52 million for the three-day weekend. That compares with $42.79 million for Fox’s Avatar a year ago — but Avatar was then in its fifth week. It added nearly $12 million on Monday, twice what Green Hornet took in on Monday of this year. Both films had 3D surcharges going for them. Universal’s The Dilemma opened in second place, but with a disappointing $17.82 million for the three-day weekend and $20.52 million for the four-day holiday. Several analysts blamed blustery weather on the East Coast and a high-rated AFC playoff game on Sunday for the box-office bust. The two films that opened last weekend, Season of the Witch and Country Strong, didn’t even make the top-ten list this past weekend.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date and include holiday ticket sales on Monday):
