MACHETE HACKS ITS WAY TO NO. 1 IN DVD SALES

January 13, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Two weeks after receiving word that the state of Texas would not pay $1.75 million in tax rebates for shooting Machete in the state, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez got word Wednesday that the movie sold more copies on DVD than any other film last week. Although actual sales figures are never announced by Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, which issues the weekly DVD and Blu-ray sales charts, it is likely that the loss of tax-incentive dollars was at least offset by strong DVD sales. (The movie earned just $26.6 million at the domestic box office.) Because the film is released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, which does not provide new releases to Netflix and RedBox until 28 days after they hit retail stores, it did not make Home Media magazine’s rental chart. That chart was topped by Paramount’s Dinner for Schmucks.
