APPLE’S ITUNES STORE DOMINATES ONLINE DVD SALES, VOD

February 8, 2011 by · 1 Comment

Apple’s iTunes Store effectively held off challenges from rivals seeking to sell DVDs online and/or “rent” them via time-limited downloads, according to industry researchers Screen Digest. Combined with other video sites, including Microsoft’s Zune, Wal-Mart’s Vudu, and Amazon Video on Demand, the market for on-demand video sales and rentals increased more than 60 percent in 2010 over 2009, Screen Digest said. However, Arash Amel, research director for digital media for the company, observed that Wal-Mart has been mounting an aggressive pricing strategy against Apple, pricing many of its video-on-demand movies at 99 cents. “The future of the online movie business may come down to a competitive battle between Apple and Wal-Mart,” Amel said.
