GRAMMYS DRAW BIGGEST CROWD SINCE 2001

Sunday night’s CBS telecast of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards drew an average of 27.56 million viewers, peaking in the 9:00 p.m. half hour with 29.30 million — the biggest audience to watch the music awards show in at least a decade and up 7 percent from a year ago, when 25.87 million tuned in. MediaWeek.com posted these results from Nielsen:

8:00 p.m. – 26.32 million
8:30 p.m. – 27.74 million
9:00 p.m. – 29.30 million
9:30 p.m. – 28.41 million
10:00 p.m. – 28.26 million
10:30 p.m. – 25.31 million

The biggest audience ever to watch the Grammys was recorded in 1984 (the year of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”): an average of 51.67 million. Just five years ago, the Grammys drew just 17.01 million, the lowest number ever.
