JANUARY BOX OFFICE: COLD AS THE WEATHER
Fewer tickets were sold at North American theaters in January than during any January since 1991, BoxOfficeMojo said on its website Tuesday. Just 94 million tickets were sold, the first time that ticket sales had fallen below 100 million since 1995, the website said. Thanks to 3D and IMAX surcharges, total revenue fell to only a four-year low. The top movie of the month was The Green Hornet with $79.1 million, followed closely by True Grit with $78.4 million. That compares with $312.1 million for Avatar, the top film in 2010.
