LAST TANGO STAR DEAD AT 58

Maria Schneider, who at 19 co-starred with Marlon Brando in Bernardo Bertolucci’s X-rated Last Tango in Paris , has died in Paris at age 58. Although she also starred opposite Jack Nicholson in 1975’s The Passenger, she was never able to live down the scandalous publicity that followed the release of Tango. “I wanted to be recognized as an actress and the whole scandal and aftermath of the film turned me a little crazy,” she said in a 2007 interview with the London Daily Mail. In the same interview, she complained that the infamous sex scene in the movie did not appear in the original script and that she was only told about when she arrived on the set. “I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can’t force someone to do something that isn’t in the script, but at the time, I didn’t know that. … During the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn’t real, I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Brando and by Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didn’t console me or apologize. Thankfully, there was just one take.”
