CBS and Fox each claimed victory in the weekly ratings race — Fox basing its claim on the results in the all-important adults 18-49 demo and CBS, on total viewers and households. Each network was dominant in those categories, with Fox claiming victory on six nights of the year among the younger demos and CBS placing 16 shows in the top 20 among total viewers. Among the nightly newscasts, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams retained the crown with an average of 9.03 million viewers. ABC World News with Diane Sawyer tightened the race a bit as it recorded 7.97 million viewers. CBS Evening News with Katie Couric again finished in third place with 6.10 million viewers. Among total viewers, CBS led with a 6.8 rating and a 12 share. Fox followed with a 5.5/9. ABC placed third with a 4.1/7, while NBC trailed with a 3.5/6.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:

1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 12.7/20; 2. American Idol (Thursday), Fox, 12.0/20; 3. NCIS, CBS, 11.7/19; 4. NCIS: Los Angeles, CBS, 10.3/16; 5. The Mentalist, CBS, 9.2/16; 6. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 8.7/14; 7. Criminal Minds: Suspect, CBS, 8.1/14; 7. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 8.1/13; 9. Criminal Minds, CBS, 7.9/13; 10. Mike & Molly, CBS, 7.8/12.
