MAGNOLIA PICTURES OFFERING VOD ON SAME DAY MOVIE DEBUTS

Mark Cuban’s Landmark Theatres chain does not seem at all concerned about movies becoming available for video-on-demand at the same time they’re in theaters. One of the reasons may be that the chain is a corporate sibling of Magnolia Pictures, also owned by Cuban, which already has offered to allow cable and satellite companies to make its films available for VOD either on the same day that they hit theaters or one week before they do. In a promo for the VOD package on its website an announcer asks, “How can we do it? Don’t ask. Just enjoy.” The website allows consumers to buy tickets in advance at Landmark Theatres for Magnolia Pictures films or access them via cable, or rent them via Amazon.com, iTunes or XBox.
