RIO STAYS ON TOP

Rio gave all of its competitors the bird over the Easter weekend as it took in an estimated $26.8 million domestically and $44 million overseas to bring its worldwide total to $286 million. The film, which is voiced by Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, has in less than three weeks (it opened abroad a week ahead of its domestic debut) taken in more than another Eisenberg film, The Social Network did during its entire domestic run ($225 million). It also edged out Madea’s Big Happy Family, which took in $25.8 million. The latest Tyler Perry movie had been favored by most box office gurus to come out ahead — and that could still turn out to be the case. His Madea movies traditionally perform solidly on Sundays among black churchgoers, and his latest one could perform far better than estimated on Easter Sunday. (Weekend estimates are based on actual box office tallies for Friday and Saturday and an educated guess for Sunday.) Coming in third was the debuting Water for Elephants, which took in a much better-than-expected $17.5 million, while Hop fell to fourth place with $12.5 million, pushing its gross past the $100-million mark. In fifth place was Dimension Films’s Scream 4, which grossed just $7.2 million in its second weekend, plummeting 62 percent, the usual second-week fate for horror flicks. Also debuting this weekend was the Disneynature documentary African Cats, which managed to scoop up $6.4 million at only 1,220 theaters.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo:
1. Rio, $26.8 million; 2. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, $25.8 million; 3. Water for Elephants, $17.5 million; 4. Hop, $12.5 million; 5. Scream 4, $7.2 million; 6.
