LONDON’S TWO TOP POLICE OFFICERS QUIT OVER HACKING SCANDAL

Paul Stephenson

Amid numerous charges that for years police had failed to investigate fully the claims of telephone hacking, Metropolitan Police (Scotland Yard) Commissioner Paul Stephenson announced his resignation on Sunday, observing that the public inquiry into the matter would take more than a year before a final report is issued, during which time he would remain under a cloud of suspicion. “If I stayed I know that the inquiry outcomes would reaffirm my personal integrity. But time is short before we face the enormous challenge of policing the Olympics — this is not the time for ongoing speculation about the security of the position of the commissioner.” His resignation was followed by the resignation today (Monday) of Assistant Commissioner John Yates, who had been in charge of the original investigation of the telephone hacking.
