MOVIEGOERS MILD ABOUT HARRY IN SECOND WEEK AS CAPTAIN TRIUMPHS

Forget what you heard about a tight race between Paramount’s Captain America and Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 at the box office this weekend. Despite fewer 3D theaters — fewer screens in general — no IMAX, and far less hype, Captain America reigned triumphant at the box office on Friday with $25.75 million in ticket sales, while the Potter finale fell to second with $14.63 million. Most box-office forecasters had figured that each film would earn around $60 million over the three-day weekend, but it now looks as if Captain America will earn considerably more than that and Potter considerably less. Indeed, Potter might very well set yet another record this weekend — biggest second-week drop-off in history. Also opening this weekend, Sony’s Friends With Benefits, took in a lower-than-expected $6.8 million on Friday.
