POLICE TOLD TO TURN OVER HUGH GRANT’S HACKERGATE FILES

July 21, 2011 by · 1 Comment

Hugh Grant

Hugh Grant, who has taken a leading role in exposing the extent of phone hacking in the U.K. by the recently shuttered News of the World, has won a court order forcing Scotland Yard to disclose details of its inquiry into the scandal insofar as they pertain to himself. Grant’s lawyers also asked the court to order police to disclose whether illegally obtained information about the actor had been passed on to other newspapers (presumably meaning those operated by News Corp’s U.K. newspaper group, News International.) In April, Grant carried out a one-man sting operation against Paul McMullen, a former reporter for the scandal sheet, who boasted on a “wire” carried by Grant that phone hacking was being carried out at News of the World “on an industrial scale.” Grant has since called for a public inquiry into the hacking.
