Andy Rooney, who had insisted only a few months ago that he would never retire, is leaving 60 Minutes, the network said on Monday. He will deliver his final essay, his 1,097th, on Sunday’s program, which will also feature a special segment narrated by colleague Morley Safer about Rooney’s career. “There’s nobody like Andy and there never will be. He’ll hate hearing this, but he’s an American original,” CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager, who is also the executive producer of 60 Minutes, said in a statement. “It’s harder for him to do it every week, but he will always have the ability to speak his mind on 60 Minutes when the urge hits him.” But the New York Times indicated, without explanation, that it was unlikely that Rooney will ever return.
