Simon Cowell is denying that he ever remarked that he would regard an audience for The X Factor of fewer than 20 million as a “disappointment.” Speaking to the syndicated gossip show Access Hollywood, Cowell said. “That was a slight misunderstanding. I wasn’t saying I want 20 million for the first episode. I said we want to hit 20 million.” In a separate interview with the Hollywood Reporter, which originally reported his remarks about 20 million viewers, Cowell appeared to reverse himself. “I’m not going to lie,” he told the publication. “I wanted 20 million when we launched … but now I’m kind of back in the real world and I’m seeing this grow naturally.” (X Factor premiered with 14.5 million viewers, then dipped to around 12 million.)
