CARS 2 RACES FAR AHEAD OF COMPETITION

Demonstrating yet again that when it comes to home video sales, it’s difficult to beat movies targeting kids, Disney’s Cars 2 sold nearly as many units as every other movie on the retail shelves put together last week. Surprisingly, 17 percent of the Cars discs sold were in the Blu-ray 3D format, although only a tiny percentage of television sets are capable of displaying 3D pictures. Those Cars 2 sales would suggest, however, that many consumers are buying Blu-ray 3D discs so that they won’t have to replace them once they finally do buy a 3D television set. Last week’s No. 2 seller was Warner Bros.’ Crazy, Stupid, Love., which, according to Nielsen Videoscan First Alert, was outsold by Cars 5-1. The previous week’s top film on the sales chart, Captain America: The First Avenger, slipped to No. 3; however, it remained No. 1 on Home Media magazine’s rental chart.
