CONSUMERS GO APES IN HOLIDAY DVD BUYS

It doesn’t sound like the kind of movie you’d give to someone as a Christmas gift, but 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes debuted at the top of Nielsen VideoScan First Alert’s DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales charts last week. A movie that does seem like one that you’d give as a Christmas gift, Kung Fu Panda 2 debuted at No. 2 on the chart but with 27 percent fewer sales. Kung Fu Panda 2, which is distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment — which does not require Netflix and Redbox to wait 28 days before making them available for rental — did debut at the top of Home Media magazine’s rental chart. But Planet, which does require a 28-day wait by Netflix and Redbox, reached only No. 20 on the rental chart.
