Ricky Gervais, who has promised to be even more outrageous when he hosts next year’s Golden Globes ceremonies than he was this year, may have given the Globes’ producers a hint of what to expect when he posted this joke on Twitter today (Thursday): “If Jesus loves the little children then why does he let them starve? Because he wants them all thin in heaven. Duh!” When the inevitable complaints flooded in, Gervais issued a statement saying that his original remark was meant to be satirical, because “Jesus doesn’t exist.” For good measure, he later added, “I don’t believe in ANY god because it’s irrational, without basis and mental. But it’s EVERYONE’S right to believe what they want.” There was no immediate reaction from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which hands out the Globes, presumably because it was too immersed in preparing for today’s announcement of the nominations for the January 15 awards ceremony.
