The week following the Thanksgiving holiday saw a peculiar shift in the Nielsen ratings. To be sure, there was the expected lineup of football telecasts in the top ten, with NBC’s Sunday Night Football taking the No. 1 spot as usual as it attracted 18.9 million viewers. Taking the No. 2 spot with even more viewers, 19.4 million (ratings are based on a percentage of total viewers), was Fox’s NFL overtime show The OT. but there were also numerous oddities. CBS’s annual broadcast of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which has aired every year at around this time since 1964 — it’s the longest-running holiday special — attracted 12.7 million viewers and wound up tied for seventh place on the Nielsen chart. CBS’s CSI: Miami, which hasn’t appeared in the top ten this season and may be facing cancellation. also tied for seventh place, and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU, which rarely has been able to eke out a rating higher than 40 these days, posted a 10th-place finish with 9.9 million viewers. And that network’s Harry’s Law, which many experts are predicting will be canceled soon, turned out to be NBC’s second-highest-rated scripted show, as it tied for 17th place with 9.9 million viewers. CBS remained at the top of the heap among total viewers and households with an average 5.6 rating and a 9 share for the week. Fox placed second with a 5.1/8. (It was first among viewers 18-49.)
