“THE PEOPLE” NAME THEIR FAVORITE MOVIES

The People’s Choice Awards, the entertainment industry’s only major popularity contest, named Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II favorite movie of 2011. It also received awards for favorite action movie, movie ensemble, and book adaptation. Johnny Depp and Emma Stone received the favorite actor and actress awards. Among other awards, Water for Elephants received the favorite drama trophy, while Bridesmaids was named favorite comedy. None of the movies favored to win Oscar nominations were among the winners. Commented Britain’s Guardian newspaper: “The people have spoken, and it seems they are not the least bit interested in black and white silent French films about Hollywood’s golden age, sweeping First World War epics or offbeat family dramas starring George Clooney.” According to the producers, 230 million online votes were cast.
