Perhaps no motion picture in history has been “restored” so frequently as MGM’s classic The Wizard of Oz. It is about to undergo yet another restoration in time for its 75th anniversary in 2014. Warner Bros. Home Video, which now owns rights to the film, said on Tuesday that it plans to stop shipping all current DVD and Blu-ray Discs of the movie beginning May 1 of this year, then relaunch if with a new master in 2013. In a statement, Jeff Baker, head of the theatrical catalog for Warner’s, said: “We expect 90-95 percent consumer awareness, with a kickoff event consistent with only a handful of titles that are considered the crown jewels of our library.” It was not clear whether Warner’s will relaunch the film theatrically or whether the release will be limited to home video.
