EVERYTHING’S COMING UP MARIGOLDS FOR FOX SEARCHLIGHT

Fox Searchlight’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which has done gangbuster business overseas — it has taken in $81.2 million abroad — brought its domestic total to $19.4 million on Tuesday, thereby crossing the $100-million mark at the worldwide box office. It is currently playing on just 1,233 screens in North America — about a quarter of the number of screens showing Men in Black and The Avengers — and with no IMAX or 3D sales to inflate its ticket sales. No matter. It has been coming in third in ticket sales, behind MIB and Avengers, on a per-theater basis. The film, featuring a plethora of older British actors, including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, and Bill Nighy, tells the story about a group of older English pensioners who seek to retire at what they are led to believe is an upscale hotel in India.
