Following a nearly two-month period in which only locally produced movies were allowed to be shown in China, Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man and Warner Bros’ The Dark Knight Rises made their debut in the country, going head to head. The results were unimpressive. The Amazing Spider-Man grossed $5.46 million while the Dark Knight Rises took in $4.45 million. The two films together didn’t equal the $11.6 million earned by Titanic 3D in April, and each was a long way from the $15.9 million raked in in China by Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which earned $15.9 million in its bow. And things are not looking up. Wrote China film analyst Robert Cain, “With Prometheus opening on September 2nd and The Expendables 2 following on September 4th, the heightened competition for Chinese moviegoers’ attention may not allow for any new records until the logjam of major films is worked through later in the fall.”
