Its ratings fell far short of overwhelming — just 4.9 million viewers tuned in — but Fox’s preseason NFL telecast on Friday was tops among 18-49-year-old viewers and gave the struggling network a rare win for the night. The telecast started off strongly, but by the time the evening was over, with the Detroit Lions leading the Baltimore Ravens 27-12, the telecast had slipped to third place. By that time repeats of ABC’s 20/20 had taken over as the ratings leader, drawing 5.7 million viewers in the 9:00 p.m. hour and 5.50 million in the 10:00 p.m. hour. On Sunday, preseason football (Indianapolis vs. Pittsburgh) also scored solidly for NBC, as it averaged 8.96 million viewers, peaking in the 9:00 p.m. hour with 10.31 million.
