That trash-talking teddy bear who stars in the title role of Universal’s Ted lost nothing in translation as the movie expanded into 10 new markets, landing in first place in seven of them. Collecting $32 million, the Universal film topped Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight Rises,, in such key markets as Russia, where, with $5.5 million, it set a record for a Hollywood comedy, and the U.K., where, with $14.3 million, it represented the third-best debut for a Universal movie in history. Now playing in 38 markets, it has grossed $77.3 million overseas. Nevertheless, The Dark Knight Rises, which is now playing in 58 markets, continued to rule the foreign box office, posting $67 million to bring its overseas total to $378.4 million. It remained the No. 1 film abroad. Just edging out Ted for second place, Ice Age: Continental Drift continued to impress as well, adding $32.8 million from theaters in 62 markets, bringing its overseas total to $530 million.
