BOXEE’S NEW DVR STORES YOUR RECORDED SHOWS IN THE CLOUD

October 17, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Boxee, which rolled out a settop box two years ago to stream movies and TV shows from the Internet to the TV, is coming out with a new box next month after the first one failed to catch on. This one, which will sell for $99, has dual tuners — so that buyers can record two shows simultaneously — but, unlike other such devices, it has no hard drive. Instead, all recorded shows will be stored in the cloud and streamed on demand. Calling the feature a “No Limits DVR,” Boxee will be charging users $15 per month for the service, which will initially roll out in November in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Washington DC. The company said that it plans to expand the service in 2013.
