Jim Carrey as Scrooge

Taking note of the apparent dearth of Christmas-themed movies this year, the conservative website is blaming Hollywood liberals. In a commentary posted on Sunday, Breitbart columnist Zachary Leeman writes, “Hollywood is full of left wingers who don’t want to offend the non-existent crowd they bow down to by uttering something as hateful as, ‘Merry Christmas.'” Leeman does allow that two Christmas-themed movies are set for theaters this season, the already-released Rise of the Guardians and the upcoming Edward Burns flick, The Fitzgerald Family Christmas. (And if may be hard to recall a year in the recent past when more than two Christmas movies debuted during the holiday season.) Leeman argues that Christmas movies are sure winners. However, he writes, “Hollywood is not just a place where liberals rule the day, but it is a place where good business decisions are rare.” Leeman, however, fails to take into account Disney’s disastrous failure with the latest version of A Christmas Carol, with Jim Carrey in 2009. The film reportedly cost $200 million to make but brought in a total of $137 million at the box office, half of which went to the theaters that showed it. (And, in the words of that old liberal, Ebenezer Scrooge: “What’s Christmas … but a time for balancing your books and having every item in ’em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? If I could work my will every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.”)
