Hugh Grant has settled his telephone-hacking lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch’s News International for an undisclosed “substantial sum” and said that he will donate the money to the Hacked Off campaign, which demands tougher press regulation. Grant had sued News International, the British publishing unit of Murdoch’s News Corp, after being informed by Scotland Yard that his voicemails had been hacked by the now-defunct NI tabloid News of the World. Grant has denounced Prime Minister David Cameron’s refusal to accept the recommendation of the Leveson committee that self-regulation by the British news media be underpinned with statutory penalties. Last week he called Cameron’s position “borderline betrayal” and said that “it suits his political agenda to be in bed with the press barons.”
