As football telecasts go, the annual Pro Bowl game has never grabbed big ratings. Sunday’s contest was no exception, as the contest averaged 9.9 million viewers, peaking in the 8:00 p.m. hour with 12.1 million, but fizzling to 7.1 million by the time the 10:00 p.m. hour came around, when it was overtaken by CBS’s The Mentalist with 10.3 million viewers. Nevertheless, it gave NBC a win for the night. Sunday night’s ratings for the game were down 20.8 percent from last year’s Pro Bowl game, when it attracted 12.5 million viewers — and that telecast, in turn, was down 8.1 percent from 2011. Last year, USA Today solicited responses on its website to the question, “Is Pro Bowl the worst all-star game in sports?”
