BBC NEWS SHOWS HIT AS JOURNALISTS STAGE WALKOUT

BBC journalists staged a one-day walkout today (Monday) to protest the public broadcaster’s reported plans to eliminate hundreds of news jobs throughout the country. In a statement, Michelle Stanistreet, general secretary of the National Union of Journalists, said that the union’s members were “angry and frustrated at the poor decisions being taken at the top of the BBC – decisions that are leading to journalists being forced out of their jobs and quality journalism and programming compromised.” For its part, the BBC countered: “We are disappointed that the NUJ has gone ahead with today’s strike and apologize to our audience for the disruption to services. Unfortunately industrial action does not alter the fact that the BBC has significant savings targets and as a consequence may have to make a number of compulsory redundancies.” Some of the most popular BBC radio and TV news and talk shows were affected by the walkout, including BBC 1’s Breakfast, its flagship morning show.
