Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy has called on News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch to pull the plug on Fox Sports’s coverage of The NRA 500 car race on Saturday. Noting that the NASCAR event, which takes place at the Texas Motor Speedway, is backed by the National Rifle Association, which gives pole winners a rifle and two six-shooters to the winner to fire off in Victory Lane, Murphy wrote, “Broadcasting this race, which will highlight the NRA and its radical agenda during this time, sends a harmful signal to the families affected by gun violence, as well as the millions of Americans who support sensible gun control measures and enjoy your sports programming.” After the Newtown massacre, Murdoch surprised fellow conservatives by calling on President Obama to take “bold leadership” on gun control, but Murphy maintained that by airing the race, “you will be strengthening the brand of a radical organization that is currently standing in the way of meaningful progress on this issue.” Murdoch has not responded to Murphy’s message.
