AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA TOPS CHINESE BOX OFFICE

Hong Kong director Peter Chan’s American Dreams in China has held on to the box-office crown in China for the second week in a row, earning $34.1 million, according to China Film News. That would be almost twice what it earned on its opening weekend. But while Dreams increased its business, ticket sales for Iron Man 3 plummeted. In its fifth week, the Disney/Marvel blockbusters brought in just $7.3 million in China, placing second, as some moviegoers complained that the addition of four minutes of scenes especially for the Chinese market amounted to “pandering.” Dreams has also not screened without controversy. While some reviewers in China described the drama — about three young entrepreneurs who strike it rich by opening a service teaching English — as “aspirational” and calculated to avoid offending authorities, others have called it contrived and “capitalist propaganda.”
