Warner Bros.’ The Hangover Part III got off to a head start at the box office with $3.1 million from Wednesday-night previews and brought in another $8.5 million on Thursday. But another new film is revving up today (Friday) and is likely to wage a fast and furious battle for first place. Tracking studies project Hangover to end up with $75-85 million over its five-day-plus holiday, while Universal’s Fast and Furious 6 is likely to take in $90-100 million over its four-day holiday. (It took in $6.5 million in late-night shows on Thursday.) Indeed, according to analysts the sixth installment of the franchise is likely to do better than any of the previous five. Along with the debuting family film Epic and such potent holdovers as Star Trek Into Darkness, The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3, the box office could set a record for a Memorial Day weekend, analysts say.
