As part of an apparent effort to upgrade the overall quality of video productions that are uploaded to its channels, YouTube is reportedly planning to unveil a subscription service for some of those channels that will cost viewers as little as $1.99 a month, the London Financial Times reported today (Monday). The channels have reportedly been instrumental in expanding YouTube’s audience to one billion worldwide. The subscription channels are expected to compete with streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. The FT noted that on Friday Bernstein Research forecast that within the next several years, YouTube’s revenues could exceed $15 billion, about the same as CBS’s or Viacom’s.
