Steven Soderbergh has apparently taken another step backwards from his announcement in January that he is retiring from filmmaking and will instead focus on painting. Channing Tatum, who co-starred in Soderbergh’s Magic Mike and will likely direct as well as star in Magic Mike 2, has told the Hollywood Reporter that Soderbergh has agreed to join the production of the sequel as director of photography. The DP on a movie is generally not the cameraman but the person responsible for lighting and the overall look of the movie. However, Tatum told the trade publication that Soderbergh “has said he would shoot it; he would DP it.” He conceded that having the director looking over his shoulder could prove to be daunting. “It would be like having sex with your girlfriend while her porn-star ex-boyfriend is in the room watching you,” he said.
