A clearly inept interview by Fox News anchor Lauren Green of biblical scholar Reza Aslan about his new biography of Jesus has boosted sales of the book after the interview went viral on the Internet. Green began the interview by asking, “You’re a Muslim, so why did you write a book about the founder of Christianity?” Looking stunned by the question, Aslan replied, “I am a scholar of religions with four degrees, including one in the New Testament, and fluency in biblical Greek, who has been studying the origins of Christianity for two decades, who also just happens to be a Muslim. It’s not that I’m just some Muslim writing about Jesus. I am an expert with a PhD in the history of religions.” Green, however, persisted in her line of questioning, drawing scorn even from some overseas publications, including the London Independent, which called the interview “excruciating” and an “embarrassing episode for Fox News.” It pushed the book, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, to No. 1 on Amazon, with demand so heavy that publishers Random House rushed to print an additional 50,000 copies. In an interview with the New York Times, Aslan said that he was thrilled. “You can’t buy this kind of publicity.”
