FIRST MOVIE WAS PROJECTED 118 YEARS AGO TODAY

Today marks the 118th anniversary of the screening of the first motion picture by the Lumière brothers, Auguste and Louis. Although some historians place the date in December 1885, today’s Guardian newspaper observes that the Lumière’s cinématographe, a combination camera and projector, was first demonstrated to a group of scientists on July 11, 1885. The film shown to them was titled La Sortie des Usines Lumière, which merely showed workers at the Lumière’s factory leaving for their lunch break. It and other first films by the pioneering brothers can be viewed on YouTube.
