Netflix may have made a big publicity splash with its original drama House of Cards, which garnered solid reviews, nine Emmy nominations, and appeared to help lift the company’s stock. However, according to a study by research firm GfK and reported in today’s (Thursday) Wall Street Journal, Netflix subscribers preferred watching old broadcast and cable shows. The study found that House of Cards accounted for less than 1 percent to TV shows watched by Netflix subscribers during a week in April, about as many as watched The Office, Glee, 30 Rock and Fringe. By contrast, episodes of Breaking Bad and Mad Men each accounted for 3 percent, while Heroes and Family Guy accounted for 2 percent. A spokesman for Netflix noted that all of those shows have many more episodes available for viewing on Netflix than House of Cards.
