Steven Soderbergh’s HBO movie, Behind the Candelabra, about the private life of Liberace, won eight trophies during Sunday night’s Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, where 77 of the 101 Emmy awards were handed out. Its closest competitors, the Tony Awards and Boardwalk Empire, won four. Most writers agreed, however, that the high point of the evening came when Bob Newhart, who has appeared on television for more than 50 years but has never won an Emmy, received a standing ovation when he accepted his first one for his guest role on The Big Bang Theory, in which he played a former host of a children’s science show. Backstage, the 84-year-old Newhart told reporters that at one point he’d stopped submitting his name for consideration. “I just felt the kind of stuff I do doesn’t win awards. I didn’t want to go through the process, the disappointment,” he said.
