Underlining the sometimes mortal risks of covering ethnic conflicts in the Middle East where journalists are often no longer regarded as neutral noncombatants, a reporter, cameraman and driver covering the conflict in Syria for Sky News Arabia (aka Sky News Arabic) have gone missing. The channel, based in Abu Dhabi, identified the reporter as Ishak Moctar and the cameraman as Samir Kassab. The name of the driver was not released because he is Syrian and his family asked that his name be withheld. In a statement, Sherif Mansour, the Middle East coordinator of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, said, “We must not understate how dangerous it is to report from Syria right now. … We call on all parties to work to ensure the safe return of the Sky News Arabic team and all journalists missing and detained in Syria.” The CPJ said that at least 18 journalists and media workers are currently missing in Syria.
