Katie Couric’s days as a daytime talk-show host may turn out to be even more shortlived than her days as a network news anchor. The Hollywood Reporter reported on Wednesday that it appears that Couric, who is in the second year of a reported $20-million two-year contract with ABC, won’t be offered a new contract when her current one runs out next fall. The trade publication quoted insiders as saying that Couric has refused to tailor her program to attract the key (for daytime) 25-54-year-old female demo and in fact has “a complete and utter disdain” for that audience. An ex-employee of the show said that she has ignored producers’ suggestions to bring in ordinary folks to discuss their problems, leading instead with academic “experts.” Last month Deadline.com reported that Couric could wind up replacing Barbara Walters as co-host of ABC’s The View, a report that Walters denied. (Deadline noted that Walters had previously denied that Elisabeth Hasselbeck would be leaving The View, only months before Hasselbeck’s departure.)
