Television viewers who “cut the cord” will not have to make do without live newscasts. AOL announced today (Friday) that it is teaming up with settop maker Roku to deliver a news channel online that can compete with Fox News and CNN. While the online news channel expects to deliver “some” original content from AOL’s own Huffington Post property, most of it will come from such traditional sources as the AP, Reuters, the BBC, the Wall Street Journal and E!, AOL said. In a statement, AOL exec Rob Delacruz said, “By delivering premium content from AOL’s owned properties and from our syndication partners, we’re able to provide Roku users with on-demand access to hundreds of continuously-refreshed news videos from the moment they start watching.”
