The Disney-owned SOAPnet channel, which has been on life-support for the past two years, will finally be shut down at the end of the year, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Monday). The demise of the channel was attributed to new technology that makes it easy for those who follow TV soaps to record them and watch at their convenience. “When SOAPnet launched, it was back in the videocassette-recorder days and you really could only record one episode at a time and you had to deal with all those cassette tapes,” Ed Martin, a soap opera expert and editor at large at MediaPost.com told the Times. Besides, the newspaper noted, only four soaps remain on the air, General Hospital on ABC, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful on CBS and Days of Our Lives on NBC.
