FROZEN CATCHES FIRE

December 8, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Frozen iced it this weekend — coming in at No. 1 with an estimated $31.6 million, ahead of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which had held the lead for the past two weeks, but which wound up with about $27 million in its third go-round. While Lionsgate’s dystopian thriller took an early lead on Friday, the Disney animated feature moved into first place on Saturday as families headed to theaters. Nevertheless, Catching Fire remained one of the top earners of the year with a domestic total of $336 million and $673 million worldwide. Crushed in the competition was the weekend’s only opener, Relativity Media’s R-rated drama Out of the Furnace, which brought in just $5.3 million. If that film represented the biggest dud of the weekend, the biggest success may have been chalked up by the Coen Bros.’ Inside Llewyn Davis. It opened in four theaters with an outstanding $418,000 or nearly $105,000 per theater, beating the year’s previous record for a limited opening set by Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine with $102,000.
