How hot was Frozen over the weekend? Well, consider the fact that it not only had the biggest opening of any film in the history of Disney Animation with $67.39 million in ticket sales, but playing in about 400 fewer theaters than No. 1 The Hunger Games: Catching Fire it nevertheless had the highest per-theater average of any film in current wide release with $18,009 per theater versus $17,776 for Catching Fire. Both films performed remarkably well at the box office, with Catching Fire coming out on top with $74.18 million and Frozen with $67.34 million. The only other film to finish in double digits was Disney/Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World, which earned $11.09 million in its fourth week. Those three films were just about all it took to lift the overall box office some 83 percent above last year’s for the comparable weekend (when it was not part of a five-day holiday), when topping the list was the third weekend of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part Two.
