Studios sometimes delay releasing their final box-office tallies after a holiday, but Paramount’s decision to withhold the figures for Anchorman 2 before the Christmas holiday came as something of a surprise to many observers. Instead, it released an estimate of $26.23 million. That was down by about $600,000 from its estimate on Sunday, but it was still only an estimate. The final results did decide which film came in third for the weekend after Sunday’s estimates seemed to put Disney’s Frozen and Sony’s American Hustle into a photo-finish. In fact, it wasn’t so close after all. Frozen came out ahead with $19.64 million to Hustle’s $17.90 million. Overall, the box office was up 35 percent from the comparable weekend a year ago when the second week of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey led with $36.94 million in ticket sales.
