Pierre Lescure, the former French television news anchor who founded the pay-TV channel Canal Plus in 1984, will succeed Gilles Jacob in 2015 as president of the Cannes Film Festival, the festival announced in Paris today (Tuesday). The 83-year-old Jacob, who has been president of the festival since 2001, is due to step down after this year’s 67th edition in May. At last year’s festival he remarked that he had promised his wife that the 2014 festival would be his last. He has been with the festival for 30 years — so long that when he published his autobiography in 2011, he titled it Citizen Cannes.
