GLOBES RATINGS STRONG BUT CAN’T COME CLOSE TO FOOTBALL’S

The Golden Globes telecast drew an audience this year that was about the same size as last year’s — about 15.5 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen overnight ratings. But the first hour of the telecast, the red-carpet arrivals, averaged 11.2 million viewers, and that part of the telecast was clobbered by CBS’s overrun coverage of the AFC divisional playoff game between the Denver Bronco and the San Diego Chargers. The 7:00 p..m. – 8:00 p.m. hour on CBS averaged 36.3 million viewers. It also provided a mammoth lead-in for the network’s 60 Minutes, which averaged 18.7 million viewers in the 8:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. half hour, edging out the first half-hour of the awards presentations, which drew 18.53 million viewers. ABC and Fox were left behind in the dust, with ABC garnering just 4.2 million viewers for the night and Fox 3.8 million.
