A RESTORED 2001 COMING TO THE BIG SCREEN AGAIN

The British Film Institute is giving Stanley Kubrick’s landmark 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, a digital facelift and will return it to the big screen as part of its 2014 Science Fiction blockbuster project, to be presented in London between October and December. The report immediately touched off speculation that the new release will also include 17 minutes of “lost” footage that had originally been included in the original premiere screening and was discovered in 2010. At the time Warner Bros. scotched the reports about a possible re-edit of the movie, noting that after the premiere, Kubrick “made it clear the shortened version was his final edit. The film is as he wanted it to be presented and preserved.” Nevertheless, such digital restorations are often accompanied by new DVD releases, and some Kubrick fans are asking to see the footage, if only as an DVD extra.
